Notion Ink Adam, good and bad news
Rohan, the founder of Notion Ink and proud father of the android tablet Notion Ink Adam wrote at last on the Notion Ink’s blog. He started with apologies and good news about the pre-ordered Notion Ink Adam that seem to have all shipped to their long waiting owners – some lost patience waiting for the android tablet though.
Other good news regarding the annoying Notion Ink Adam Sleep-Wake bug is definitively fixed and the issue was the manufacturer who wasn’t applying the correct code. Notion Ink Adam owners who returned their android tablets got seriously delayed as the units were considered as import and not return but Notion Ink also fixed that problem by now having a bonded warehouse in China so technicians can work on returns while the android tablets are still under customs.
The painful screen protection installation is a thing of the past when you purchase a Notion Ink Adam as it will be installed at the factory just after the screen calibration. I wish that Motorola had this idea as well for the Motorola Xoom – I suffered a lot having to install the screen protection on our 3 Motorola Xoom.
Rohan talked also about other Notion Ink delays culprits like the camera which was faulty 40% of the time, and the Qi Pixel screen manufacturer which needs cash in hand prior to manufacturing any display for Notion Ink Adam – normal behavior when suppliers work with startups like Notion Ink.
To avoid delays, Notion Ink will stock parts and negotiated a SLA with its manufacturer. All good news for the Notion Ink Adam.
The bad news is that Google won’t release the Honeycomb code to the public and according to what I was sent earlier, Google won’t allow android tablets to be upgraded from 2.x to 3.x – meaning that the Notion Ink Adam won’t be upgraded to the android tablet OS. Notion Ink applied for access. Worse case scenario if Google enforce the no android tablet upgrade to Honeycomb, Notion Ink can release a Notion Ink Adam 2 running exclusively on Android for tablet. But I’m not certain that the Notion Ink Adam really needs Android 3 to be a great android tablet.
